Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 Review: Back into the Game | Technology Tell

From the review, "Hyperdimension Neptunia RE;Birth 1 serves as a parody of the gaming industry, often taking jabs not only at the RPG genre, but at gaming tropes in general. The game appears on the surface to be a sexist, fan service riddled, cliche, vapid romp through a ridiculous, conceptual world. The reality couldnt be further from the truth. Sure, there is a bunch of fan service, especially in the character design, but it is done in such an over-the-top, ironic fashion that you could never feel embarrassed or offended by it. In fact, the characters even go out of their way to point out how hilariously fan-service-y it is. This game doesnt just break the fourth wall, it flat out refuses to accept that such a thing even exists."

The Hyperdimension Neptunia series is something that, until recently, I had admired from afar. I knew about the series and had seen some gameplay when fellow oprainfall manager Steve Baltimore went through them. This was my chance to check it out for myself.

With the developers willing to go back to the drawing board with Neptunia Re;Birth 1, a lot of the issues that plagued the first title in the trilogy have almost all been washed away. Gone is the infuriating battle system, replaced with the one featured in Neptunia Victory which did its job well in that entry. For those of you coming into the series for the very first time, this is a very good thing

PS Vita Reviews just got to the Embargo date and have posted their review of Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth 1!
"Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth 1 is a very funny and beautiful RPG. The games story wont hold the attention of those wanting a series Final Fantasy VII level of story and the frames do drop a fair amount in some dungeons. However, for everyone else, there is a unique RPG experience here that will be new for newcomers to the series as well as series veterans that will take up lots of your time and bring you a lot of laughs and smiles."

For those who havent played the original version on PS3, the game takes place in GameIndustri: a land made up by the continents of Lastation, Lowee, LeanBox, and Planeptune. The four continents are each ruled by their own Goddess. After years of conflict between the goddesses known as the console wars, the tide changes when three of the goddesses decide to exile one to the continent itself. The Goddess Neptune is forced into a 3 on 1 fight, and her defeat sends her down to the continents. Neptune wakes up in the house of Compa, a nurse in training. Neptune cant remember anything from her past; Compa believes that she is suffering from amnesia. Compa explains how monsters are starting to roam the area and are a danger to the people of Planeptune, and Neptune takes it upon herself to go fight the monsters and help keep the people safe.
